this morning freezing rain was with just the start of a crazy weather week. coming up, tom kierein tells us what else we have in store and whether we'll enjoy the changes coming. good morning. welcome to news 4 midday. i'm barbara harrison. >> i'm keith russell. monday, january 28, 2013. this morning we had up to 300 school and government closings and delays because of wet. the icy rain created dangerous driving conditions. now crews are treating the roads to make driving easier. news 4's tony tull live in leesburg.

how's the situation there? >> all morning long we have been dealing with all different kinds of conditions. rain, freezing rain, sleet early on. i want to show you what we are dealing with now. if you look at the sidewalk it looks wet. when i kick it you can see the ice coming up. that's what people have been dealing with all morning long. >> putting salt down to keep people safe so nobody falls. try to stay ahead of it. >> it was an early morning jump on the weather putting down salt before end up here in leesburg. >> just be careful. the roads are all right. as far as the sidewalks, be careful on that. >> reporter: earlier this morning freezing rain and low

temps made an easy commute on route 7 a miserable mess. even getting out of the house caused problems in the area. >> it's a nuisance, you know. >> reporter: reggie evans spent a few minutes of his morning scraping ice off the car. >> it's slippery. i guess they cancelled schools to err on the side of caution. >> reporter: word came early schools in the region were playing it safe, keeping kids home. the buses sit in aot here extending the weekend another day. since midnight, v-dot had around 650 trucks deployed throughout the area putting down brian, salt and sand. major roads were in fair condition. the common theme -- >> wasn't bad. wanted to get here before all the employees that work in the building got here. >> that's the conditions a lot of folks in northern virginia. that caused schools to be closed

or have a two-hour delay. some of the places here in leesburg, some folks are just now getting to work, putting salt down. >> you keep yourself safe. >> not everyone was lucky enough to stay home today. the nasty early morning weather caused problems for drivers. news 4 talked to those who braved the roads to get to work today. >> in german town a steady pitter patter of freezing rain for the morning. accumulating just enough, as you can see on the sidewalks. even a little bit on the roadways. enough to make for a little bit of a worrisome commute. along 118onday the roads mostly wet. slick sidewalks, untreated surfaces and neighborhoods and parking lots making many a bit nervous. >> how are the roads? >> slippery. you have to be careful. it's slippery out there.

>> bonnie marshall stopping for gas here but staying warm inside her ice-coated car, gearing up for a trek north to frederick. during our trek from the district to northern montgomery county we spotted many a plow. some salt trucks taking care of parking lots. crews waiting for slick spots to pop up. >> being from alabama i don't get nervous. just be cautious about people and what they have going on. try to go from there. >> reporter: many heeding the warnings, being extra cautious. some headed to work before dawn to try to beat traffic. >> i'm on a two-hour delay. a lot of traffic. i get hung up and then it's bad. >> reporter: in rockville, treated streets, mostly wet, but that doesn't mean sidewalks don't need to be scraped. some we talked to said they are so over the cold while others aren't bother bid a kiss from

old man winter. >> the roads are good right now. pretty good. >> with so many of us wearing so many layers of clothing it's a little bit difficult to believe a warm-up is on the way. we know it's coming. i think a lot of us are very happy. in german town maryland, news 4, back to you. >> while the warm-up is on the way, so is rain today. tom kierein joins us with the first mid-day forecast. >> good morning. the only travel problem now is mainly road spray out on the main interstate. the beltway where everything is just wet now. it was north of washington where we had the persistent freezing rain now tapering off and ending. look at the radar. at the beginning there a lot of white. that was sleet and snow briefly. moved into the eastern shore followed by freezing rain. now just lingering rain. areas in green. a few pockets in pink. maybe areas of lingering freezing rain. a little light freezing near northern montgomery county and

north of there to frederick along south mountain getting some. still light icing. little icicles and a coating of ice. otherwise a break from the rain. may have another additional shower this afternoon. these are the temperatures now around the metro area above freezing into the low to mid 30s. all above freezing from the bay west to the district. prince georges, arlington, fairfax, montgomery counties all into the mid 30s. we ought to gradually climb a little bit into the afternoon. then soaring temperatures this week. details on that, seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, tom. >> let's check the midday traffic now. mike is here for danella. >> looking good on the belt way. on 66 slow inside 495 a. let's look at the incident in virginia. right lane is shut down. manhole explosion has north capital shut down at h street northwest. >> thanks, mike.

new this morning, police in annapolis are investigating a deadly shooting they say started as a domestic argument. officers responded to the 300 block of harry s. truman parkway this morning. they found a man and woman with gunshot wounds. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. the woman was taken to the hospital. she's in critical condition. closing arguments in the case of a police officer charged with murder. daniel wright is accused of shooting and killing 54-year-old patricia cook last year. friday he gave a tearful testimony of the shooting. george also had a chance to leave the courtroom and see the scene of the shooting for themselves. wright claimed he shot cook in self-defense. >> later this afternoon the senate will announce a major st forward in immigration reform. members say they have agreed on the framework of a sweeping change to america's immigration lawses. the deal will address better border security and more effective system to ensure

companies don't hire undocumented immigrants. it helps create a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already here. senators from both sides of the aisle say it's time for comprehensive reform policies that work. >> americans support it in poll after poll. latino voters expect it. third, the democrats want it. fourth, republicans need it. >> we can't go on forever with 11 million people living in the shadows in this country in an illegal status. >> president obama hits the road tomorrow to push for new plans. he'll travel to las vegas for a speech detailing changes and will discuss gun control. >> in minutes president obama and vice president joe biden meets with police chiefs from around the nation to discuss gun control regulation. chiefs from aurora colorado, oak creek and newtown, connecticut, all three towns that experience deadly massacres meet at the white house. the group will discuss the

person right now under investigation. they believe a band's pyrotechnics started the fire in santa maria. they identified the bodies of 231 people killed. family and friends are already holding funeral services for loved ones today. brazilian president dilma rosef declared a period of mourning for the victims. lawmakers will talk about how to stop worsening violence there. it was a deadly weekend there. more than 50 people died in protest. the demonstration started as egypt marked two years since the revolution began. president mohamed morsy declared a state of emergency and curfew in several cities. >> hillary clinton is beginning her final week as secretary of state. friday will be her last day as head of the state department. this week the senate is expected to vote on confirming john kerry as her successor. on "60 minutes" last night clinton said her contentious battle for the white house with now president obama in 2008 made

the elevated surfaces. look at ice on the potomac river. cold enough for ice to form there, too. the mallards are happy to get out into the open water. as we look at the photograph i just took this morning, there is magical icicles on the shrubbery in front of the building in northwest washington. north and west of washington we had icing. we talked about all different types of weather when i visited centreville, center ridge elementary school. the teacher on the right and back invited me to talk to the very bright second graders who have had a unit on weather already. we discussed the importance of paying attention to the forecast and severe weather. there was a huge group of them at the center ridge elementary school in venterville, virginia. had a great time talking to the second graders there. there's the sky over washington now. it's foggy with lingering rain

in washington. just cloudy at reagan national. 35 there. the wind coming from the south off the river at 13 miles per hour. it's now beginning to get above freezing. most of northern virginia, most of maryland in the nearby suburbs in prince georges county, montgomery, arlington, fairfax. now into the mid 30s. we'll gradually warm up a little bit. this is what's happening over the last several hours. most of the wintry precipitation pulling east. there is still showers out here in the midwest. moderate showers. southern into st. mary. on the eastern shore. we have snow as far as boston. we'll continue to see this rain headed to the east, pulling away. going forward the rest of the afternoon by early afternoon, a

emmy award winning actor richard schiff is taking the stage at the shakespeare theater playing the main character in "huey." he joins us with more on what audiences can expect. what should we look for in the play? >> i find it to be a very beautiful little portrait that o'neal wrote late in his career about a down and out guy from a flea bag hotel. a two bit hustler guy. if you take one of the characters from iceman comethe and did a play about him it might be huey. wonderful actors have been attracted to the role.

among them was christa mcall au live. it blew up due to a bad seal on a rocket booster. this week nasa will remember the fallen astronauts from apollo one and the shuttle columbia. >> today a rally in support of repealing the death penalty in maryland is taking place. this afternoon the relatives of five murder victims will join a rally and lobby day in annapolis. they are supporting governor o'malley's push to repeal the death penalty. it's organized by the maryland citizens against state executions. university of maryland students are on high alert after three men were arrested for alleged armed robbery. a fourth suspect is still at large. samuel chicas, benjamin chicas and two other men robbed a student using brass knuckles. they got away with a wallet, iphone. police are still looking for another suspect who robbed the

student at the varsity apartment complex. the incidents have many students on edge. >> it's kind of unsettling. we were looking at apartments and we got a text message saying there was an armed robbery here. >> police are looking for the fourth robber they say tried to take a student's laptop at gun point. the student fought back and the suspect ran away empty handed. >> today a northern virginia law maker will make a case that the commonwealth should buy the dulles green way which is privately owned saying if the state control it is toll road between the airport and leesburg one goal is to make sure toll prices do not increase. the company lost $27 million last year. >> let's check it now. >> overall things looking great. more good news in virginia.

met you and saw what you and your family went through. you have made yourself a person with a story to tell and kids listen. >> i reflect back to the day len died. i thought my life was over. actually, what i learn ed is tht len was a seed that went into the ground to bring life. i'm here alive and well by the strength of god. with faith and still believing in our young people. we believe they are reachable and saveable. we must change our approach. it's such a young age today. we understand it with length of days comes understanding. so through national drug facts week we want to give the young people gentle reminders about

who they are and making healthy decisions. learning from the losses that so many people experienced from their children being involved in drugs in some way. >> how are you going to reach out to kids all over the area this week? they will be participating in what wayses? >> i know i will be participating with the mentors. i will be going back. giving a brief interview doing q & a about my son len. one thing i will share is the importance of not only viewing drug prevention as not using drugs, but also thinking about good mental health. protecting yourself mentally and making a good decision and one of the main points that i will make is that i believe that my son len would have still been

alive today if it were not for his associations. the people that he was associated with. so i believe that one of the greatest messages that i could bring to young people is to pay attention to your support systems and be very selective and understand that you're a champion and you have a gift within you. >> well, you have certainly got a gift and so did your children. this june it will be 27 years. >> yes. >> since len's death. >> yes. >> he was university of maryland basketball standout. he just signed with the celtics. >> yes. >> he had a great future ahead of him. how can we change the culture? what can we do now? >> i think one of the things we have to do is really take prevention seriously. what i noticed in the past 27 years is we are still having the same conversations that we had

in 1986 about drug prevention. we have built an infrastructure on outcome -- the results of drugs. we need the infrastructure. i think prevention works. the big p is prevention. it gives power and purpose. >> you are amazing. so great to see you after 27 years. >> thank you. you look great. >> that's what i was thinking about you. of course i always say your children are tall. they got it from you. >> my grandchildren. let me throw this in. when len and jay died i thought my life had ended. my two remaining children are married, have wonderful spouses and i have five grandchildren and three of my grandsons from 21, 18 and age 12 are all athletes. >> little basketball players?

you're watching news 4 midday. >> chris brown is under investigation for assault. he apparently got into a fight with a man over a parking spot outside a recording studio in west hollywood los angeles. the county sheriff's deputies responded to a report of six men fighting in a parking lot last night. the department says brown punched the victim. tmz identifies the man as grammy nominee frank ocean who later tweeted that brown and a couple of guys jumped him. deputies expected to talk to brown about the incident. >> good entertainment news now.

hollywood is buzzing as ben affleck's movie "argo" takes home the top prize as the screen actors guild awards. >> first i want to thank my wife who i love. our kids who i also love. you know, and warner brothers who i love. not as much, but i love them. >> he has to love everybody. "argo" won outstanding cast. the sag version of best picture. he directed the iran hostage crisis thriller. "argo" won at golden globes and producers guild awardses. the film goes to the oscars with momentum. they are february 24th. meantime, stocks mixed this morning. let's check in with courtney reagan who joins us live with more on that and the rest of the day's business headlines. good morning. >> good morning. we are still wait iing for the w to cross 14,000 again. the dow is lower.

makings for caterpillar includeded a dim view of the economy. that's brag dragging down the dow itself. the demand for big ticket items did rise more than 4.5% in december. led by bookings for aircrafts. that's according to government data. after a string of better than expected the national association of realtors says pending home sales fell 4.3% in december after hitting two-year high it is month prior. december's number higher than a year ago and potentially held back by a limited supply of available homes for sale. u.s. airways and american airlineses are in the final stakes of merger talks and a deal could be announced in the next two weeks. the parent company amr plans to meet today and tomorrow. amr hasn't made a final decision on a merger. the company still considers its own restructuring plan a viable option. american filed for bankruptcy in november of 2011.

a reminder, the cost of stamps increased again over the weekend. it will now cost you 46 cents to send a letter by regular mail. 33 cents for a postcard. the forever stamps are government good no matter what price you paid for them. i accidentally stocked up on stamps last week. i was surprised that i beat the price increase by a couple of days on accident. >> courtney, i might as well walk my letter to the destination. >> remember when stamps were 25 cents? i remember that. four for a dollar. >> we're dating ourselves. thanks. >> thanks, keith. >> i remember when they were ten cents. according to the national chicken council's 2013 wing report more than 1 billion wing portions will be consumed during super bowl weekend. marcus douglas is here from wingtown. they will be serving up wings and are joining us to give us wings secrets. how many wings do you think.

just plain wingses. we put them on and cook it 15 minutes. >> after they are done we mix the sauces up. we put them in and shake them up. >> so every sauce gets into every little nook. >> these are secret sauces? >> we have a lot of sauces. a lot of different flavors. >> we have lemon pepper here. >> if you would like to spice it up, we have cayenne and special suicide sauce. >> what's in that? >> really hot. it's mixed with hot sauce, cayenne, crushed pepper and spices. the recipe from alabama. >> i see. the secret is you cook them first. then whatever you want on them

you're watching news 4 h midday. >> we're looking at a live picture from the city of baltimore where they are holding a pep rally for the ravens before the team heads to new orleans. today's pep rally features a current super bowl team as well as the former players from the team's 2000 super bowl winning squad. the ravens looked to capture their second title while the 49ers are hoping to win their sixth super bowl championship. >> another sport we can talk about is the sport of yoga. poses are a series of movements to increase strength and flexibility. there are reasons having a flexible body is essential to our health and well-being. ken weeks from balance yoga is here with your student namdeny. got it. let's get her in the first pose here and talk about why flexibility is important and why people should do yoga to stay flexible. >> we think of flexibility as inversery related to age.

come on up into cobra pose. beautiful. >> what's this working? >> her spine. it becomes inflexible and the hips as you age. you use yoga to turn the aging process from being anything else. >> how long does it typically take for a person po become more flexible through yoga? >> i would say almost instant. after the class you think, oh, my gosh, i had no idea i could feel so good. after months you realize i'm farther down to touching my toes. just feeling more open in the chest. >> can you do the last pose again? kim, just take a step back just a little bit so we can see it. this is like ultimate flexibility. >> it is. she has to work her hips super open to lift up the thighs and pull your chest up thereunder through.

head back. >> this works the hamstrings. >> quads, belly. it reverses the aging process. i'm telling you. >> how have you seen it in terms of people who deny age through yoga. >> the thing with yoga is it's about taking care of yourself and going inside. the more you look at stretching your body from the inside out versus how you look from the outside in she'll come right into this drop back now. doing things like this -- i know this is a hard pose and amazing. >> wow. that's like an upside down smile. >> upside down smiley face, exactly. >> this is something people may not be able to do it right away. they can aspire to it. >> some version of it. when you do the yoga poses look at flexibility through yoga improving the quality of your whole life. >> thank you so much for showing how yoga can be beneficial as we get older.
